Discover the Spirit of Limpopo: The Cabinet of Curiosities

When you think of Limpopo, what comes to mind? Is it the vibrant colors of its landscapes, the rich cultural heritage of its people, or the stories that echo through its valleys and hills? At the heart of this magnificent province lies a treasure trove waiting to be discovered: the creativity, traditions, and artistry of its communities. And now, this essence is being packaged into something truly extraordinary—the Cabinet of Curiosities.

A Treasure Chest of Limpopo

Picture this: beautifully carved cabinets, each a masterpiece of craftsmanship, standing tall like storytellers in their own right. As the doors swing open, the spirit of Limpopo is unleashed in a vivid burst of colors, textures, and history. These cabinets are more than just display units—they are windows into the soul of Limpopo, each one uniquely curated to ensure that no two displays are ever the same.

Each cabinet is also an art piece in itself, thanks to the skilled hands of Limpopo’s talented woodcarvers. Their intricate carvings transform these cabinets into standalone masterpieces, blending function with beauty, tradition with innovation. Every detail tells a story, every curve and line etched with the energy of the people who call Limpopo home.

What Lies Within

The contents of the Cabinet of Curiosities are just as enchanting as the cabinets themselves. Imagine an array of goods and artworks, each handcrafted by the talented artisans and creators of Limpopo’s communities.

From textiles to sculptures, jewelry to ceramics, the cabinets offer an authentic collection of items that reflect the diverse cultures and heritage of the province. Each item is imbued with the spirit of its maker, a piece of their story waiting to be uncovered by those who explore the cabinet.

But the magic doesn’t stop there.

The Power of Storytelling

Every cabinet comes with more than just art—it comes with a story. To ensure that the richness of Limpopo’s culture is conveyed to every visitor, we offer a complementary storytelling workshop for lodge staff.

This workshop equips staff with the knowledge and skills to narrate the stories behind the art, providing a deeper connection between visitors and the land they’re exploring.

Imagine being a visitor, opening one of these intricately carved cabinets.

The polished surface gleams with the warmth of tradition, but it’s the stories behind the items that truly bring them to life. Through storytelling, visitors aren’t just purchasing a piece of art—they’re taking home a piece of Limpopo’s soul. This connection fosters a greater appreciation for the province’s rich cultural heritage, ensuring that its legacy is celebrated and preserved.

Empowering Communities, Enriching Experiences

The Cabinet of Curiosities is more than just a business venture; it’s a platform for empowerment. By showcasing and selling art from Limpopo’s communities, we give artisans the opportunity to share their work with a wider audience, providing them with a sustainable source of income. At the same time, visitors gain access to authentic, meaningful art that carries with it the spirit of the province.

This initiative is about creating a bridge—connecting the creators with the admirers, the land with the people, and the past with the present. It’s about celebrating the uniqueness of Limpopo and ensuring that its vibrant culture continues to thrive.

The Calling: Discover, Experience, Celebrate

When you hear the calling, will you answer? The Cabinet of Curiosities invites you to step into a world of discovery, where every cabinet holds the promise of adventure and every item tells a story. It’s more than an art display; it’s an experience that captures the essence of Limpopo and brings it to life in a way that’s tangible, immersive, and unforgettable.

So, the next time you find yourself in Limpopo, look for the cabinet. Open its doors. Let the colors, textures, and history wash over you. And take home more than just a souvenir—take home a piece of Limpopo’s story, a connection to its people, and a memory that will last a lifetime.

The Cabinet of Curiosities is waiting. Will you answer the calling?

“When we emerged, we began to climb the thread – it was the thread of the sky! Yes, my friend. Now up there in the sky, the people up there, the spirits…they sing for me so I can dance” says Old K’xau, a !Kung shaman in Edward and Cathelijne Eastwood’s book, ‘Capturing the Spoor’. And we can see it too in ochre paint, emerging from the rock face are three Shamans transformed into humans with animal heads, faces upturned towards a string of light coming down from the sky. They are bleeding from the nose and have ochre smears across their bodies where the ‘n/om’ or supernatural potency has been activated at the base of the spine. Nearby, slim Kudu appear to be climbing out of the cracks in the rock from the spirit world behind it. We feel as if we have stepped back in time as we stand beneath this sheltered sandstone overhang with our guide, Jonas Tlouamma who has brought us here to see these precise and beautiful San paintings. The Makgabeng Plateau lies south of the Blouberg and west of the Soutpansberg, near the town of ‘My Darling’ in the North-west of Limpopo Province. Rising 200 metres above the bushveld, the Makgabeng stretches over a distance of 250 square kilometres and most of this is uninhabited. Imagine towering ochre cliffs, strange rock formations rising out of the bushveld surrounds, vast expanses of wilderness and over 800 unique KhoeKhoe, San and Sotho rock art sites undisturbed for centuries. Imagine this and you are still nowhere close to the reality of this awe-inspiring, wild and wonderful place. Take a day tour or spend the weekend at the Makgabeng Farm Lodge.
